Colourful Chronicles : Playful Soft Pastels 22 May 2025

A recording of live illustrating a children's illustration portfolio piece with soft pastels. Some personal rambling and art tool tips!

Hello, finally I made some time to write and post this recording from my last live on Substack. Kindly note that due to bluetooth connection with my phone first 10 mins are very low in voice, Thanks to

who noticed and I disconnected my phone from the bluetooth and you can hear my voice clearly 10 mins onwards. so, skip the first 10 mins if you want and watch the rest of the video. Hope this helps!

I’m very proud of showing up for 4 lives this month and doing 3 soft pastel illustrations + 1 colour key exploration (which is still due to finish as final illustration with my iPad, lol!)

Here are the final illustrations from this month.

1st illustration was painterly, 2nd was flats + painterly + lines, the last one more of with my style and precision as an illustrator.

My main take aways from this months lives:

  1. My confidence for this material grew and I reached on saying what is my style for illustrating with soft pastels when I reached on last live.

  2. Doing free play during lives helps touching base with art fundamentals at the same time joy of creation is tremendous.

  3. Committing more 4 lives next month of June, but with Watercolours!

Lightbulb moment of the month:

Consistency is the key to growth and
Experimenting more can lead to the style.

Materials I used for this month are: Sketchbook Paper, Soft Pastel Coloured Papers, Camel Artist Soft Pastels, Art Studio Soft Pastels, Spectrum Soft Pastels, Koh-I-Noor Soft Pastels, 2 Brown Coloured Conte Paris Soft Pastel Pencils, Huion Light Pad, Q-tips, Stomps and Wet Wipes.

A gentle reminder! You don’t need to have all different brands of soft pastels when you start…I used multiples as I have got them already!
